Luke Whitteker, a model of perseverance
Luke Whitteker wins the Canadian Nationals Championship
Version française ici The final race of the Draper Door Canadian Nationals Championship at Cornwall Speedway is over. We were treated to a great fanfare to celebrate the race winner Steve Bernier. There was also another winner that night, Luke Whitteker, who won the 2018 Canadian Nationals championship last weekend. It's truly a miracle that Luke is even able to race considering the serious injuries he suffered in a skiing accident last winter. The 24-year-old from Iroquois, Ontario overcame it and is now the 2018 series champion. I asked Luke what he thought of the win. “At the start of the season, I wasn't sure I could come back this season because of my injuries. After winning the victory at the evening of opening at Brockville Ontario Speedway for the fourth straight Ogilvies Series event (50 laps), I knew I still had everything I needed to compete and overcome my injuries. “The Canadian National events at Cornwall Motor Speedway were definitely in our plans since a win in the series had eluded me in previous years. In 2017, I led the race in every event, but was never able to claim victory due to mechanical failures in all three events. » “The Canadian National events at Cornwall Motor Speedway were definitely in our plans since a win in the series had eluded me in previous years. Things got even more complicated when I had a puncture on the 35th lap. We got back on the track just in time to stay on the leader lap. I gained several positions before I had more problems, trying to avoid contact with another car and losing control all the way to the center of the track. On the restart, I had to start again in 15th position and I found myself in third position where I finished the test and obtained the title. It means a lot to me and my team. I want to thank Raymond Lavergne and Joe Draper of Draper Doors for putting together a great series. For Luke it's been a season of ups and downs as he faces constant pain, he's learned to persevere through the season, clearly showing he still has what he's got. it takes to become a champion.
