Granby Set for Grand Finale for the 2020 Season – DTD Exclusive
By DON SIMPSON
Autodrome Granby is holding its grand finale of racing this Friday, September 11, with $3,000 on the line. The main-event will see 100 laps for the 358 Modifieds on the historic ½ mile track. The night’s racing will also see the crowning of this year’s champions in all of the regular divisions. Also, racing will be the Sportsman Modifieds, Pro Stock, and the Sport Compact.
The Slingshots will be racing the middle track, giving a full complement of action.
With last week’s event rained out, the teams put their focus into the final championship which will see the teams pulling out all the stops to race for their final points standings.
It was a frustrating night last week for some of the racers as they were hopeful of coming out of the race with some much-needed points added to their totals before heading into the final championship night.
One such racer was Sportsman Modified driver Moise Page who had a disappointing outcome a few weeks back and he was looking to make up some ground on points leader Even Racine. For the entire season, Moise and Even have been going toe-to-toe for this year’s championship. The race two weeks ago put things somewhat out of reach for the number 66 driver.
Moise explains: “Racine is sure to win the championship, but I am still in the battle with Alex Lajoie for the second-place finish with only a one-point difference. Lajoie is always a clean and close racer and it will be a good battle with him this coming Friday. For me, the last night of racing is to finish the season with a win.”
It would appear that Even Racine will capture the Sportsman championship, and rightly so, as he drove brilliantly all season. The weekly battle with Moise Page provided fans with some of the best racing of the season.
It’s much the same in the Modified division with Francois Bernier leading the points going into this week’s race. David Herbert, however, is still within striking distance with only 43 points separating the two front runners. It’s not a done deal yet for Bernier, especially with the bonus points to be added on this final night of racing. On the other hand, anyone of the top five is really still in the game if you include the possible bonus points. The fact there are some very close for the second and third places, this Friday’s race will be a real battle on the track.
The Sport Compact division is also having a close battle of its own for this year’s championship. The No. 49 of Alexis Charbonneau and #0 of Mathieu Voghell have both had two wins along with several top-three finishes. It’s anyone’s year to win between Charbonneau and Voghell as these two racers have shown their talent within the Sport Compact division. But don’t count out Danick Sylvestre in the #9 or the #83 of Sebastien R. Beauregard. These two have had numerous podium finishes and are clearly in the hunt for a top-three finish to the season.
The Pro Stocks will also see their champion crowned this Friday. Pascal Payeur in the #338 car and Yves Hamel in the #194 car will race for the chance to be this year’s champion. These two drivers have had a close battle all season. Payer has definitely shown that he is the man to beat and if things go as smoothly this Friday as in past weeks, he will be hard to stop for the championship.
Pascal said,”For Friday I will do the same thing as all year. I will be going into Friday’s race to make some tests and try to win. The main thing is I will be going to have fun and prepare my car for next season as well. I had a good year with my new car and I have a lot of fun with my crew and my family. I want to keep that plan going, the same way for the rest of the season. The Pro Stock class was very strong this season with Bruno Richard, Dany Voghel, and Yves Hamel along with the rest of the field. Really anyone can win and I need to keep the same momentum If i want to win this Friday.”
The teams are ready. This coming Friday will be one good night of racing as drivers jockey for their final standings. All the extras will be put forth for this final race and one you do not want to miss. It can be viewed by visiting the Autodrome Granby website at https://autodromegranby.com to purchase access to this race. It will be the best race of the season.
