Canadian Modified Series Set to Hit the Track for Round Two at Cornwall Speedway’s Fall Showdown Prelude – DTD Exclusive
By DON SIMPSON
Cornwall Motor Speedway is ready to host the Fall Showdown Prelude, Sunday, September 27, with the second 50-lap round of the Fat Les’s Chip Stand Canadian Nationals for the 358 Modifieds. The Canadian Nationals is the premier series in Canada for the 358 Modifieds and is the one most sought championship in the Northeast.
The Canadian Nationals came about when former track owner Ron Moran was looking to create a series specific to Cornwall Speedway. Prior to this, there was a multiple track series Ron had established, involving several other local tracks that were highly successful.
“As time went on and the series grew, so did the long hours of work,” Ron explains. “Therefore, in the early 2009 season, it was decided it would be the last year for the Lucas Oil Canadian Dirt series. In 2010 the Canadian Nationals was born.”
The first round of the 2020 Canadian Nationals series was run this past Labour Day Weekend, attracting 32 challengers to race for the win. Local drivers and the current track champion Corey Wheeler took home the win of this first round, setting the bar high for the next event of the series
Wheeler, who has been putting all his attention in 2020 to his home track of Cornwall Motor Speedway, has really shown his presence at the track, capturing two wins so far this season. Corey going into round two of the series is looking to keep this momentum going as the team performance is peaking at the right time.
Corey stated, “Winning the first race was a good start and a confidence builder for sure. It’s certainly going to be a challenge going into the next four races! Cornwall has attracted so many great racers that it’s an honor just to have won this year. There are too many great racers to predict who will come out on top. We will work to be consistent and fast. I look forward to the challenge ahead and want to thank the Lavergne family for giving us a great year of racing in uncertain times.”
One of the more notable mounts to come out of the last round was the fact that the top three were all local drivers which shows the caliber of our local talent. Cornwall Motor Speedways spokesperson Martin Belange explains, “Speaking of local, it was nice to see three local runners in the top three with Wheeler, Dingwall, and Raabe, finishing one two and three.”
Yes, Wheeler has the momentum currently but Kyle Dingwall, Ryan Arbuthnot, Mat Williamson may have something to say about this, as you can never count them out. Chris Raabe and David Hebert have also shown to be in the hunt as well. It’s still anyone’s game going in this next round.
Also on the schedule for the Fall Showdown Prelude is the second round 50 lap of the TAS Sportsman series. The first round was won by Johnathan Ferguson who in his own right has been having a great season with four wins added to his stats this season. Ferguson, who has been running very strong at the Cornwall Motor Speedway, is clearly a front runner. However, it’s not a done deal yet as Jarett Herbison, Robert Delormier, and Jessica Power have been rated in the mix of things all season at Cornwall and will press hard on Ferguson to take the win.
On this night will also see the fast lighting Sprints back in action with a 23- lap feature race. The Mini Stock will have a 20-lap event, capped off by a 20- lap Vintage feature — a full night of action.
Racing gets underway at 6:00 p.m., with hot laps prior. The full show can be viewed live on 360Nitro Tv and the pre-race show will start at 5:30 p.m. This is one show which you will not want to miss. Track spokesperson Martin Belange explains: “The Prelude to Fall Showdown Weekend should a great night of racing with five classes in action. The Canadian Nationals and TAS Racing Sportsman Series are continuing and we should see some tight racing in preparation for the big October weekend.
