A difficult evening for Steve Bernier
A tough evening for Steve Bernier La
version française ici With the recent visit of the Super DIRTcar series, which has come and gone, I have been considering whether to chronicle the efforts of local racer Steve Bernier who has challenged invaders from the United States. The seasoned driver is always up for a challenge on the Autodrome Granby track despite the difficulties he experienced getting the big block into the car and preparing for the final. Fortunately, the event was delayed due to weather conditions, which weren't the best for racing. Steve was on track to have a great time, but one of the other competitors caused a yellow flag which slowed the field down. Once restarted, Steve couldn't get back into the rhythm of the track until there were no more laps to go, leaving him with the eighth best time, which is not what he hoped for. Leaving the disappointing result of his timed times behind him, Steve focused on qualifying ahead, which was only a few minutes away. With some minor suspension tweaks, Bernier headed for the start line, along with the rest of the riders in his group. In a few minutes of fast racing, Steve crossed the finish line in fourth place in his group, Photo credit: Don SimpsonSteve entered the starting line-up with little time left to start in 13th position as the cars were already rolling down the track. Due to light rain, drivers were asked to continue driving on the track to help make it suitable. With the track now dry and the fireworks launching, the peloton set off for the 100 lap final. Bernier started to move through the field and on lap 42 he was in 6th position when a yellow flag came to stop any progress. Photo credit: Don SimpsonWith a prolonged yellow, the car was overheating due to the amount of heat in the engine due to the previous hard race. But with slow speeds during yellow, there just wasn't enough air through the radiator to cool the engine. Fortunately, the green is finally given and the pilots can now go at full speed. Unfortunately, the damage was done, and Steve found that the engine lacked the power it should normally have. Slowly but surely the car started to lose positions as the laps continued to climb. A flat tire eventually sent the #25 car to the pits where the team tried to cool the engine by changing the tire and adjusting the alignment on the front end. Photo credit: Don SimpsonBack on the track the issues continued to persist and within a short time Steve was back in the pits with another flat tire. Bernier did a few more laps, but on lap 76 he parked the car for the rest of the final. In the end the engine just wasn't going to last as it was overheating a lot and before the engine gave up the ghost he decided it was time to admit he wasn't going to finish the job. race. Clearly Steve was disappointed with the results of the evening, as he had a competitive car, but the result of all this leaves team #25 with a 20th place finish and a damaged car, forcing the team to withdraw from the next race which was held at Autodrome Drummond the next day.
