Steve Bernier of St. Hyacinth, QC tops off the season at Airborne Park Speedway by taking home the 2018 Championship track in style.
Bernier raced his way from the 10th place starting position in the feature, to capture the win along with the Egglefield Ford 358-Modified track championship.
From the drop of the green flag Bernier moved through the field of cars quickly, but soon found himself in a tough battle for the lead against fellow Quebec drivers Dany Gagné in car 90, Maxime Plante in the 79 car and Roger Labreche in car 100.
On lap 19 Labreche spun out, leaving Bernier, Plante and Dany Gagné to race for the lead.
The trio of drivers put on quite a show for fans as they raced it out for six laps, but with five laps to go, Bernier pulled out a large lead taking the 25 car to victory lane.
This was Bernier's 6th win of the season, who loves racing at the Plattsburgh track, and in victory lane praised the track owners along with the track staff for creating a great facility.
He went on to thank all the fans and his crew, for all their support. The biggest thanks were to his family and his wife Melanie for all their help and support in fulfilling this dream.
For Steve, it has been a storybook year racing at the 64-year-old track. “It has been a great season, here at Airborne, a track I really like racing at” Steve explained.” I came into the season following eye surgery last spring hoping that the surgery wouldn't hamper my racing plains, but in the end, everything worked out better than expected” Steve went on to explain.
Steve will now move on to compete in the DIRTcar 358 series, which will finalize in mid-October at the Brockville Speedway's Fall Nationals
The nights racing didn't end there thou. In the Poirier's True Value Sportsman race Jeremy Roy of Napierville, Quebec, took the number 90 car to victory lane, after a nail-biting finish.
Codie Aubin leads most of the latter stages of the race with Roy charging hard to catch the leader. In a last lap charge, Roy passed Aubin to take home the victory, his first career Sportsman victory at Airborne Park Speedway.
