The Sportsman in the foreground
Mohawk and Airborne tracks create a new Sportsman Unique eCigs series.
The french version here Mohawk Raceway officials recently confirmed a new series for the Sportsman class. There will be a total of five rounds in the 2018 season and each will consist of a 50-lap finale and the first round will begin on May 26 at Airborne Speedway. The series has been co-formed over the past few months between John Lazore of Mohawk Intl. Raceway and Airborne Speedway's John Walker, hoping to improve the track rivalry that has naturally occurred over the past season. The two owners wanted to create a specific series for the Sportsman. John Walker explains that they are often overlooked by Modified 358s. With this new series, the Sportsman class will be brought to the fore, giving them a head start in 2018. This will give fans some good runs as the teams battle it out for the series title. The Sportsman Series has been great for Mohawk Speedway over the years; “It's the same as Airborne,” says Lazore. By creating this series, it's a winning formula for fans and tracks, and it was only natural to create such a series between the two tracks since they are close to each other. John Lazore then introduced the concept to a friend, Michael Frennier, the Managing Director of Unique e-Cigs who has been in business for eight years with 10 branches. Michael agreed it was a good idea for the tracks and the fans. He looks forward to working closely with John Lazore and John Walker over the next season. The announcement of the Sportsman Unique eCigs series is a positive step for both tracks and for fans there will be no shortage of drivers to cheer on each track. This increases the roster to approximately 25 teams while potentially attracting additional teams to surrounding tracks. Fans should see good drivers, such as Airborne Speedway's Connor Cleveland, Jamy Begor and Moïse Pagé, take on Mohawk Raceway's Johnathon Ferguson, Thomas Cook and Brent Kelsey. As mentioned, the first round of the series will be held at Airborne Speedway on May 26, followed by Mohawk Raceway on July 20. August 11 will host round three at Airborne Speedway followed by August 31 at Mohawk Raceway. The final decisive round will take place on Friday, September 14 during Super DIRT Week. The purse structure for the series will be the same as the DIRTcar points funds. With the creation of this series, John Walker and John Lazore are excited about this news and can't wait to see how it plays out for fans. There's been some talk that if it goes well they might expand the idea to other classes, but for now the two said it's too soon. As both tracks expand their racing series,
